Appreciating the Lord as our rock

As we look at life’s challenges, we often need strength to cope with the rigours of these challenges. David had his own fair share of challenges because of the enemies that he had to fight with. He had to encounter many dangers and difficulties.

But one thing that sustained him was his relationship with God. He always turned to the Lord for His strength…through depending on Him. David used rhetorical questions to express his appreciation of the Lord as his God…as his rock, “For who is God, except the Lord? And who is a rock, except our God?” (Psalm 18:31) There was no doubt in David’s mind who this God was to him. He was certain that He was Lord and that He was his rock…an image of strength for him.

The source of strength

The Lord was David’s divine source of strength. His own personal strength could go so far and no more. The Lord gave him the strength that he needed, “It is God who arms me with strength, and makes my way perfect.” (Psalm 18:32) David was armed with strength. This strength was meant to be used. David used this strength to face the challenges of life.

Through His strength, the Lord made David’s way perfect. Without the strength of the Lord, David would not be able to go on his way as he would have hoped for…especially in fighting  his enemies. The Lord’s strength would indeed make a difference for all of us. Let’s seek to be strengthened by the Lord.

Through His strength, God enables us

“He makes my feet like the feet of deer, and sets me on my high places.” (Psalm 18:33)

David used the imagery of the feet of deer. With strength, the Lord made David’s feet as the feet of deer. Deer are well known to be skilful in climbing up mountains. It takes great skill and strength to climb up and down the mountains. There is such certainty in their movement.

We too can walk with strength and skill…with great certainty. And we will be able to be victorious in climbing up to the high places. Let’s be enabled by the Lord to have the strength to rise above and to triumph over our challenges

With each challenge, the Lord gives enough strength

“He teaches my hands to make war, so that my arms can bend a bow of bronze.” (Psalm 18:34)

David had to learn to make war. This was important for his survival. The Lord taught him to fight. Yet in facing each battle, the Lord gave him enough strength to fight…to even bend a bow of bronze. The Lord would provide the appropriate strength for each challenge.

When we are faced with the challenges of life, let’s turn to the Lord as our strength…as our rock. He will be able to provide for us all the strength that we need to battle with the difficulties of work and of life. Let’s be challenged to make God our Lord…the Lord as our rock and strength.
