The Concept Of The Kingdom Of God

An exciting concept

The kingdom of God is a wonderful concept to study and to understand, and it is not meant to be only theoretical but also real and relevant. The Lord Jesus focused on preaching about the kingdom of God as it brought salvation and hope to the world. As the Messiah, He came to call sinners to enter into the kingdom of God (Matthew 4:17).

But for many of us, the kingdom of God does not seem to be all that real as we are not conscious of it. We struggle with understanding its complexities and we do not see its relevance in our daily life. Let us be challenged to correct this wrong approach to the kingdom of God. Let us seek to learn more deeply about the kingdom of God and to appreciate its reality and relevance to our life. These are some thoughts that I have come to understand and appreciate.

1. The glorious gift of the kingdom

a. It is exciting to learn about Daniel’s prophecy concerning the kingdom of God.
b. It is about the kingdom, dominion and the kingdoms under heaven (Daniel 7:27).
c. It is specially given to the people, the saints of the Most High (Daniel 7:27).
d. The kingdom of God has been given to us to enter, be part of and belong to.
e. It is not only seen as the kingdom of God and His Son but also our kingdom (Matthew 5:3).

Let us appreciate this awesome privilege to be given the glorious gift of the kingdom of God.

2. The great light of the Lord and His kingdom

a. The Lord Jesus Christ as the Messiah-King came to bring light to the world.
b. He brought about the kingdom of light to address two problems:
i. Darkness…Christ as the great light has the power to deliver people from the power of darkness into the kingdom of God and of light (Matthew 4:16, Colossians 1:13).
ii. Death…Christ is the answer to the shadow of death (Matthew 4:16).

As we are already in the kingdom of God in this life, when we die, we would not be stepping into darkness, but we would be stepping into the light….the kingdom of God. Let us be comforted and uplifted by the light of the kingdom in facing darkness and death.

3. A deeper discovery of the kingdom

a. The challenge is to understand the greater depths of the kingdom of God.
b. It is not something that we can understand from outside the kingdom.
c. Only when we enter into the kingdom of God would we be able to “see” His kingdom.
d. The Lord Jesus told Nicodemus, the Pharisee, that unless he was born again, he could not see the kingdom of God (John 3:3).
e. And even when we are in the kingdom, only when we are committed to learning, digesting and dwelling on the kingdom of God that we would discover its deeper truths.

Let us be challenged to go deeper in discovering the great mysteries of the kingdom of God.

4. The purposeful sharing of the kingdom

a. God sent the Lord Jesus with the purpose of preaching the kingdom of God (Luke 4:43).
b. Through His preaching, many were able to enter into His kingdom.
c. Only when the kingdom of God is real and relevant to us would we be able to learn, as the Lord Jesus did, to have a sense of purpose to share the kingdom of God.

As we prepare for Easter, let us be challenged to discover more deeply about the kingdom of God and make it our purpose to share it with those who are still outside His kingdom.
