Celebrating Bethany’s 48th Anniversary

I would like to take this opportunity to wish everyone, “Happy 48th Anniversary!” As we look forward to a special time of thanksgiving this Sunday, I echo the words of the Psalmist, “Praise the Lord! I will praise the Lord with my whole heart, in the assembly of the upright and in the congregation.” (Ps 111:1) It is with joy and praise that we can gather together as a congregation. There are many reasons to praise God with our whole heart this Sunday.

The wonderful works of God

The Psalmist wrote that the works of God are great and to be studied (Ps 111:2). How should we understand the works of God? The Psalmist gave us good insights concerning the works of God as he studied them. He wrote about the features of the work of the Lord, that they are honourable and glorious (Psalm 111:3). The works also reflect the attributes of God, that He is righteous, gracious and full of compassion (Ps 111:4). Let us appreciate these thoughts as we remember the wonderful works of God in Bethany (Ps 111:4).

1. Our church, our building, our land

One great work of God is our church building. We tend to take for granted what we have as a church. This week, I spoke to two persons who shared about the challenges their churches are facing. One church has a land lease of 30 years that is about to end and are in discussions with the authorities about renewing their lease. Another church is renting a space with a 3-year lease. As a response, I could not but praise God for the freehold land that Bethany sits on and for the building that we have worshipped in over the years. Let us give praise to the Lord for showering His grace and compassion upon us all these years.

2. The Word of God

We also give praise to God for His Word. The Psalmist wrote, “The works of His hand are verity and justice; all His precepts are sure.” (Ps 111:7) The work of the Lord is done based on His Word. Truth has been a key aspect of our church all these years. Over the last two months, Pastor Charles has been teaching us truths concerning leadership and the future of our church. One truth that I have learnt personally is that an essential focus in leadership should not be on the leader but the congregation (Numbers 27:16–17). Another important lesson is always to see ourselves as only servants of the Lord. David had to humble himself before God as he related to Him in a close Father-son relationship (Ps 89:26). It is this relationship with our Father that will sustain us in our life and ministry. Another vital lesson is about the lovingkindness of God. Even if we were to fail, the lovingkindness of God will never forsake us (Psalm 89:33). His faithfulness will not fail us. These wonderful Words of truth have challenged and encouraged my heart. Let us give praise to God for His Word that has been established in Bethany over the years as a strong basis for the work of the Lord.

3. Raising more leaders for the Lord’s work

One significant event this Sunday is the ordination of Pastors Moses and Eugene. We thank God for His work in their lives and for raising them up…to be ordained as pastors. It will be a special milestone for them in their journey as servants of the Lord. But it is also just the beginning as they seek to continue to grow and fulfil their part in the future of Bethany. It is in fear of the Lord, in wisdom and with good understanding that we do His commandments and His work (Ps 111:10). Let us be much in prayer for Moses and Eugene as they take this step of ordination. Let us praise God for all His wonderful works in Bethany this anniversary.
