Remembering Jerrie Jiang

Our hearts are deeply saddened by the news of Jerrie’s passing. She had been fighting with leukaemia and complications for the past 4 years.

Her death is indeed hard for us to come to terms with as she was so young when she passed on. She was only 23 years old.

But yet as we take time to remember Jerrie Jiang, we want to celebrate the life and faith of Jerrie rather than to dwell in sorrow of her death.

Let us be challenged to celebrate all that she was to us.

Appreciating the faith of Jerrie Jiang

At the Christmas Worship Service of 2013, Jerrie gave a testimony about her fight with cancer.

One thing that stood out to me in her testimony was her faith…especially in coping with the treatment for her leukaemia. She went through a lot of pain and suffering as a result of a bone marrow transplant and going through radiation and chemotherapy.

But her focus on the amazing example of the Lord Jesus gave her a new perspective concerning her own suffering. She learnt to follow the example of the faith of our Lord Jesus.

The faith of our Lord Jesus

“Not My will, but Yours, be done” (Luke 22:42)

These were the words that Jesus said in His prayer to His Father in the Garden of Gethsemane. While the Lord did struggle with the impending suffering that was to come, He prayed in faith to God. His focus was on the will of His Father. He prayed for God’s will to be done and not His own will.

This was truly a prayer of tremendous faith that the Lord Jesus reflected. He was going to be obedient to the will of His Father no matter how challenging it was.

Jerrie was deeply encouraged by the Lord’s faith and obedience. She too saw her own suffering as the will of God and she sought to have faith in God to go through the challenges ahead. Her example faith is one that is truly inspiring.

A prayer to do the will of God

For many of us, we are caught up with our own will…to do things according to the dictates of our heart.

Yet, life often presents itself with something that may not be according to our expectations. We may be faced with our own fair share of suffering in life…both in small and big ways.

Let us be challenged to see things from the Lord’s standpoint…according to His will. Let us be inspired by Jerrie who followed the example of the faith of our Lord Jesus. Let us be challenged to pray that “not our will be done” but “the Lord’s will be done.”
