The preaching of the Word of God

“For indeed the gospel was preached to us as well as to them;” (Heb 4:2)

A key ministry that the church should always focus on is the preaching of the Word of God. The author of Hebrews highlights this as something that he had experienced for himself…that the gospel was preached to him and to others. The Word of God is meant to be consistently preached so that many may be able to come to know Christ.

In Bethany, we have sought to emphasize the preaching and teaching of the Word in all our ministries and in our YAG ministry. But how much has the Word of God made a difference in our life?

The problem of not benefiting

“But the word which they heard did not profit them,” (Heb 4:2)

The word “profit” means “to be useful, to benefit”. The author of Hebrews was deeply concerned that the brethren that he was addressing did not benefit from receiving the Word of God. They may hear the Word but it was not helping them. Is the Word doing good for you as it should be?

There is a real danger when we hear the Word of God year in year out and not see any benefit to our life and ministry. Let us not allow this problem to persist for yet another year. Let us seek to make the Word of God so much more real.

The practice of mixing faith with the Word of God

In order for the Word of the Lord to profit us, we need to mix it with faith, “Not being mixed with faith in those who heard it.” (Heb 4:2)

The word “mixed with” in Greek is “sugkerannumi” which means “to unite, to be tempered together.” We are to unite and to temper both faith and the Word of God together. The Word of God that was heard had to be mixed with faith. Only then would the Word benefit us.

How do we mix faith with the Word of God?

  1. Our faith should give us the highest regard for the Lord’s Word
  1. Faith should help us to understand the Word of God. We should learn to see the truth of the Word through eyes of faith
  1. Faith should lead us to apply the Word diligently. The Word will reveal the true state of the heart and guide us in our life and ministry.
  1. Faith in the Word will cause us to grow and to mature spiritually.

As we can see, we recognise how crucial it is to have faith mixed together with the Word of God in order for the Word to truly be of use for our life and ministry.

Let us be challenged to practise mixing our faith with the Word of God that we may truly grow and be greatly blessed.
