Lessons about meditation

The pulpit theme on “meditation” has been most exciting to study. Pastor Charles has been teaching us many wonderful lessons on meditation that have been a blessing to my own heart. These are some of the lessons that have stood out to me.

1. Discernment

Our meditation is on the Word of God. The Psalmist gave the challenge to meditate on the law of God day and night (Ps 1:2). The Word of God is specially “coded”, and we should take time to meditate on it and “decode” it. Through meditation, we would be able to receive the discernment to understand the difficulties of life that we are going through. In facing these challenges, let us not be overwhelmed with fear and anxiety. Let us find the discernment that God gives through His Word to understand and overcome the distresses of life.

2. Depth

“Be angry, and do not sin. Meditate within your heart on your bed, and be still.” (Ps 4:4)

Meditation also helps us to approach our challenges in a deeper manner. There will be times when we would end up being angry, which is a natural thing to feel. But there is the danger that our anger can lead us to something more drastic and we can end up in sin. Meditation helps to fill our mind with the Lord. It is where deep knowledge of God can give to us special assurances. For instance, we can be assured that God does hear and answer our prayers (Ps 4:3). As we fill our mind with the Lord and His blessings, our thoughts would sit more deeply until it affects the heart. As we have a deep sense of assurance of what God can do for us, we can find stillness of heart. Let us be challenged to meditate deeply on the Word of God.

3. Consciousness

“Give ear to my words, O Lord, consider my meditation. Give heed to the voice of my cry,

my King and my God, for to You I will pray.” (Ps 5:1,2)

Meditation cultivates a sense of consciousness. It is not just about thinking about things. There is a sense of consciousness throughout the day. David began the day meditating on God as Lord and King. He was conscious of God as he prayed. David was conscious of Him post-prayer. When he entered the house of the Lord, he was mindful of the Lord’s mercy and leading. As we place our trust in the Lord consciously, we can find special joy in Him. Let us, through meditation, develop a greater sense of consciousness of God amidst the difficulties of life.

4. Appreciation

“The words of the Lord are pure words, like silver tried in a furnace of earth, purified seven times.” (Ps 12:6)

As David meditated on the promises of the Lord given to him, there came a deeper appreciation of the worth and value of His Word (Ps 12:6). The Lord assured David that He would arise and provide safety to those who yearn it. To David, these were the pure words of the Lord. David compared the purity of the word to the purity of silver, which is purified seven times in the fiery furnace. The pure words of the Lord are true and dependable. The Lord will preserve and keep them forever (Ps 12:7). The Lord’s Word stood in contrast to the words of the wicked which are false and corrupt (Ps 12:2–4). As we meditate and experience the reliability of the Word of God, let us deeply appreciate its purity.

Let us meditate on the Lord’s Word with greater depth and consciousness that we can overcome the stresses of life.
