The source of our help

When we are in need of help in our life’s challenges, to whom do we turn? The Jewish pilgrims would often return to Jerusalem because of their love for this city on a hill. They would look to this hill for their encouragement and inspiration.

The Psalmist reflected this focus, “I will lift up my eyes to the hills— From whence comes my help? My help comes from the Lord,” As they lifted up their eyes to the hills, they also sought to look to God for help. It was God who was their source of help. No matter what kind of difficulty we may go through, the Lord will be our help.

The person of God

When we look to the Lord, we are focusing on the person of God.

1. As Creator

“Who made heaven and earth.” (Ps 121:1,2)

The Lord is Creator of all. He created the heaven and the earth. As Creator, there is no help that He cannot give.

2. As Keeper

“He will not allow your foot to be moved; He who keeps you will not slumber. Behold, He who keeps Israel shall neither slumber nor sleep. The Lord is your keeper;” (Ps 121:3,4)

The Lord will also keep us. He keeps us from being moved. He would not allow anything to happen to us.

3. As a Watchman

The Lord will watch over us always. As the Lord, He does not sleep. He will keep watch over us all the time. He is our Watchman.

The protection of the Lord

“The Lord is your shade at your right hand. The sun shall not strike you by day, nor the moon by night.” (Ps 121:5,6)

The Lord will be a shade from the hot sun. He will be close to us and provide the necessary shade both day and night. God’s protection is given 24 hours a day. Thank God for the Lord’s help of protection in our time of need.

The preservation of the Lord

“The Lord shall preserve you from all evil; He shall preserve your soul. The Lord shall preserve your going out and your coming in from this time forth, and even forevermore.” (Ps 121:7,8)

In all that we have to face, the Lord will preserve us. He will preserve us from evil. His concern is our soul and He would guard it.

In all that we do at work or at home, the Lord will preserve our going out and coming in. The Lord will preserve us forever.

Let us be challenged to look up to the hills and beyond…to God for His protection and perseverance in the challenges of life.
