Looking to God

When we are faced with the reality of the difficulties of life, what should our response be? Should we allow our anxieties and fears to get the better of us? The answer is “No”. Our response should be one of faith and hope…to look up to our great God for help.

The 4th of August will always be remembered as the day in which Chen Kee suffered a minor heart attack. I thank God for the quick action of our church doctors in helping Chen Kee address the problem. I truly appreciate the oneness of support that was shown by the pastoral team and the brethren from Bethany through this ordeal. At the same time, I had to learn to look to God to watch over us.

A merciful God who watches over us

“Behold, the eye of the Lord is on those who fear Him, on those who hope in His mercy,” (Ps 33:18)

Psalm 33 is a passage that has become very real to me through this time of difficulty. One thing that struck me when we look to God is that He would always watch over us. The eye of the Lord is on those who fear Him, who hope in His mercy. When we seek to have reverence for God and to place our hope in Him, God would extend His mercy whenever it is needed. Let us look to God to watch over us and to show us His abundant mercy.

The manifestation of God’s mercy

How is God’s mercy manifested?

  1. Deliverance
“To deliver their soul from death, and to keep them alive in famine.” (Ps 33:19)

The Lord would show His mercy by His deliverance. He would deliver us from death and would specially keep us alive and well. There are times when our life can be in danger but there is always God’s deliverance and mercy to hope in.

  1. Protection

“Our soul waits for the Lord; He is our help and our shield.” (Ps 33:20)

Going through the difficulties of life, I’ve learned to wait upon the Lord for His help and protection. There will be times of uncertainties and anxieties. But in His time, the Lord will bring about help and protection. Let us appreciate the mercy of God as seen in His protection.

A response of joy to the mercy of God

“For our heart shall rejoice in Him, because we have trusted in His holy name.” (Ps 33:21)

When the Lord shows us His mercy, we should respond with joy. In trusting the Lord and His name, we can rejoice in Him for all that He has done for us out of His mercy.

A further prayer of hope for God’s mercy

“Let Your mercy, O Lord, be upon us, just as we hope in You.” (Ps 33:22)

While the immediate problem of the heart attack has been addressed, there are still uncertainties for Chen Kee in the future. But it is so comforting to look to God further in prayer…to pray in hope of God and to ask for His mercy each and every day. Let us be challenged to learn to look to God as One who watches over us and to hope in His mercy through the difficulties of life.
