Insights from the Lord’s Word

We thank God for the Word of the Lord. Through His Word, He gives us the insights that we need to face the challenges of life. I deeply appreciate what Pastor Charles taught from Ps 1, that we can delight in the Lord’s Word when we can draw light from it (Ps 1:2). The light or the insights that we gain can help us understand life and face its challenges better.

Insights for a deepening crisis

As we are faced with new measures due to the ongoing spread of the COVID virus, there will come changes to our plans and lifestyle. What insights from the Scriptures am I focusing on as I learn to cope with these difficult circumstances?

1. The will of God

Let us recall what we have learnt about the will of God. We want to continue to pray, “Your will be done.” (Matt 6:10; 26:42) The circumstances of life can change quite quickly. Yet, we recognise that it is all within the will of God. The challenge is to submit and adjust our plans to the plans of God. We should realign our will to the will of God.

We thank God for our government who is seeking to manage the crisis wisely and as best as they can. Let us learn to accept all measures that have been imposed. Let us be challenged to see each new “normal” as the will of the Lord.

2. Love for one another

As a church, while we could have continued our worship services with fifty people, Pastor and the Session decided to return to having online worship services. Our decision is based on our love for our brethren.

While we have been called to liberty, we also want through love to serve one another (Gal 5:13). We may have the liberty to carry on with our physical worship services. But that approach would put our brethren at risk of contracting the virus, especially with a new variant spreading rapidly on our shores. Our service for the Lord must be with love. Let us be challenged to cultivate and display the fruit of love in these adverse circumstances (Gal 5:22).

3. The Word of God

As we are encouraged to remain at home, we have more time on our hands. There is no better time to practise meditating on the Word of the Lord. I particularly like what Pastor shared at last Sunday’s Morning Worship about the Jewish way of looking at a day and about meditation. They begin the day from the evening and continue the day in the morning (Gen 1:5). David practised meditating in the evening and continued his meditation in the morning (Ps 4:4; 5:1–3). It is a refreshing new way to practise meditation. Let us plan to meditate more each day during these challenging times.

4. The sovereignty of God as King

As we face an uncertain future in the near term, let us be conscious of our Lord as King (Ps 5:2). He reigns as our sovereign Lord and is in control over all things. He is our best defence and shield (Ps 5:11,12). Let us with greater consciousness pray to our King to protect and keep us through these difficult times.

Let us be challenged to meditate on the Lord’s Word and find insights that will help us triumphantly face the challenges of life.
