The gospel of Christ

One precious thing concerning our faith is the gospel of Christ. It is through the gospel that we have come to know Christ and to have faith in Him. We are able to find salvation in the Lord Jesus and discover a whole new life in Him.

If we truly understand and appreciate the gospel of Christ, it should affect our way of life.

Conducting ourselves worthy of the gospel

The Apostle Paul challenged the Philippian church with these words, “Only let your conduct be worthy of the gospel of Christ,” (Phil 1:27) The word “conduct” indicates the life of a “good citizen”. As a good citizen of heaven, we are expected to live as people who are of the kingdom of God. Our good conduct should be deemed worthy of the gospel of Christ.

This was very much seen in the life of Paul as his conduct was truly worthy of the gospel. He demonstrated love as he fellowshipped with the brethren in the gospel. (Phil 1:5) He showed courage as he went to prison for the sake of the gospel. (Phil 1:7) Paul also boldly defended and confirmed the gospel. (Phil 1:7) He showed faithfulness as he focused on the furtherance of the gospel. (Phil 1:12) The example of Paul reveals to us the kind of citizen that we ought to be. Let us be challenged by his good example to walk worthy of the gospel of Christ.

Consistency in our conduct

“so that whether I come and see you or am absent, I may hear of your affairs,” (Phil 1:27)

How we conduct ourselves should be consistent at all times. Paul challenged the brethren to make sure that whether he was present with them or not, their conduct should still be the same. When we have come to truly value the gospel of Christ and the faith that we have, it should not matter whether someone sees us or not. It should not matter whether we are in church or working in the office or at home. Our lifestyle as a citizen of heaven must continue to be worthy of the gospel.

Appropriate expressions of our conduct

“that you stand fast in one spirit, with one mind striving together for the faith of the gospel,” (Phil 1:27)

1. Standing together in unity

As brethren in Christ, we should have a great sense of oneness. We should stand fast in oneness of spirit. It requires that we have the same spirit and the same mind to continue to stand together in unity. Nothing should in any way affect the oneness that we have.

2. Striving together for the faith of the gospel

Our challenge is also to strive together for our faith…the faith of the gospel. There will be those who will scheme to adversely affect our faith through false teachings. With the spirit of oneness, we must defend our faith and combat all false teachings. When we conduct ourselves worthy of the gospel, we would not only have a defence that is verbal but one that is also seen through our lives. Let us be challenged to strive together for the gospel of Christ.

Let us be challenged to live and conduct ourselves as good citizens of heaven. Let us with a great sense of consistency and oneness stand together for the faith of the gospel.
