Let us behold

As we approach Palm Sunday and Holy Week, let us find a greater sense of focus on the Lord Jesus and all that He did. The Lord Jesus declared, “Behold, I have come—in the volume of the book it is written of Me—to do Your will, O God” (Heb 10:7). The word “behold” in Greek is “idou” which means “to see”. The Lord is calling us to see and understand Him for all that He came to do. What is it that we want to behold?

  1. The Lord Jesus came with the knowledge of all that was written of Him in the Scriptures. That is amazing. He knew all the prophecies concerning who He was and what He would do.
  2. He saw these Scriptural references as the will of His Father. God’s plans for Him were not according to His own will, but His Father’s will.
  3. The Lord’s divine purpose was to fulfil all Scripture that concerned Him. I stand in awe of what the Lord came to do. Let us behold Him as we remember His triumphant entry into Jerusalem this Palm Sunday.

“Behold, Your King is coming”

What is it that we want to behold in this triumphant event?

1. The fulfilment of Scripture

“All this was done that it might be fulfilled which was spoken by the prophet,” (Matt 21:4)

The Apostle Matthew recorded how the disciples specially prepared a colt for the Lord Jesus to ride upon in His triumphant entry into Jerusalem. He saw this event as a fulfilment of Zechariah 9:9. The will of God was fulfilled as Jesus said He would do. Matthew was able to behold this. I, too, see and appreciate the Lord Jesus in His fulfilment of Scripture.

2. The triumphant entry of the King

“Tell the daughter of Zion, “Behold, your King is coming to you,”” (Matt 21:5)

Jesus’ entry into Jerusalem was one of great triumph as King. His victory was over the evil works of Satan and his demonic forces, over the clutches of sin and over the power of death. No other king had the kind of triumph that the Lord Jesus had. Let us behold His victory as we remember Him riding gloriously as King into Jerusalem.

3. The humble entry of the Messiah

“Lowly, and sitting on a donkey, a colt, the foal of a donkey.” (Matt 21:5)

The Lord Jesus was like no other king. An earthly king would usually ride on a horse in a victory parade. But Jesus was riding on a lowly donkey, a colt, and it reflected such tremendous humility. No other king would reflect such humility. I stand in awe of our great but humble King.

Adoring Christ with understanding

When the Lord Jesus entered Jerusalem, many lined the streets to greet Him (Matt 21:9). But many of them did not understand who Jesus was. Even the disciples lacked understanding (John 12:16).

I thank God for a deeper understanding of what the Lord Jesus came to do. My response is to adore the Lord Jesus as our great Messiah King. I rejoice in Christ, knowing of the great victory over sin, Satan and death that He has given to all of us. Let us follow the example of the Lord Jesus, who came to submit in fulfilling the will of God humbly. Let us truly behold and stand in awe of our glorious and triumphant King.
