Understanding the work of God

It has been a fascinating two months of learning concerning the work of God as we prepare for our 40 + 4 Anniversary. God’s work is indeed so varied. It is truly extensive as we see in His creation such as the moon and the stars. (Ps 8,19) It is miraculously powerful as we see His work in Israel when He parted the Red Sea and as He led them through the wilderness. (Ps 78) God’s work is also very specific as He personally works in each and every one of our lives. (Eph 2:10) We truly thank God for all the work that He does.

Appreciating the link between the work of God in our life and in the church

As we consider the work of God, what is the link between the personal work of God in our life and the great work that He does in our church…in Bethany?

There is a vital link between these two works of God.

1. The “poetic” work of God in our life

“For we are His workmanship, created in Christ Jesus for good works,” (Eph 2:10)

As Pastor explained, the word “workmanship” in Greek is “poiema” where we get the English word “poem”. Even though we were made of “questionable” material because of our sinfulness. But God can, through His love and mercy, do a new and significant work in our life in and through Christ.

As a result, we can become His “poem” for good works. These good works can be seen as works that are done in the church. It is our service to the Lord. If we allow God to do His work in our life…to make us a truly beautiful poem, then we would be able to carry out His good works in the church far more effectively and significantly. Let us be challenged to look for God’s further workmanship in our life.

2. Our part in the great work of God in the church

As His workmanship, we can be part of the great work of God. We have studied and learnt deep lessons about the great work of God. (Ps 111:2) In application, we can see the great work of God in our church over the years.

But we also recognise that God’s work in the church involves people…each and every one of us. As a body of Christ, we are “joined and knit together by what every joint supplies, according to the effective working by which every part does its share,” (Eph 4:16) All of us can play our part in contributing to the work of the church…to bring about its growth and development. If God is truly working in our life, then we can be part of that work and to do our share more effectively in His great work in Bethany.

Praying for the work of God as we enter into our 40 + 5 year of ministry

As we look ahead to the new year of ministry, let us pray…

  1. For God to work further in our life that we may become His beautiful “poems”.
  2. For God’s work to appear to us…that we can do our part in Bethany. (Ps 90:16)
  3. For God to establish the work of our hands. (Ps 90:17)

Let us look forward to another exciting year of beholding and doing the work of God!
