Understanding the meditation that is acceptable

How do we determine that our meditation is acceptable to God? Many of us tend to wrongly assume that we understand what proper meditation is. The Psalmist David made an insightful prayer to help us appreciate what meditation is more deeply.

The example of David practising acceptable meditation

“Let the words of my mouth and the meditation of my heart be acceptable in Your sight,” (Psalm 19:14)

David wrote this prayer at the end of Psalm 19. It was a prayer that he made after careful consideration as to what would be deemed as acceptable meditation to the Lord. There were some things that David had written about and focused on in this Psalm.

1. David focused on God as Creator and how He revealed Himself through creation (Psalm 19:1–6).

a. All of creation reflects the magnificent glory of God.
b. It reveals marvellous knowledge of who God is and His greatness.

2. He also focused on the excellence of the Word of God (Psalm 19:7–9).

a. The Word of God also reflects the awesome glory of God.
b. It displays great and divine power when it is understood and applied.
c. It can work effectively in the life of man and change him wonderfully.

3. He pleaded for the cleansing of his sins (Psalm 19:11–13).

a. The Word of God revealed David’s true state as His servant.
b. He prayed for the Lord’s cleansing of his secret faults and presumptuous sins.
c. It was the power of the Word of God that would deal successfully with his sins.

Acceptable meditation based on God’s Word

By instilling God’s Word in his heart, David experienced cleansing and change in his heart and life. The Word of God empowered him to overcome the stubborn sins that he was struggling with.

Only then would the words of his mouth and the meditation of his heart begin to be acceptable to God as he prayed (Psalm 19:14). His words in prayer would no longer be his own words but would be in line with the glorious Word of God. His meditation and thoughts would be guided by God’s deep and wise Word.

Reasons to practise acceptable meditation

Why should we seek to practise acceptable meditation?

  1. God would be pleased with this deeper kind of meditation.
  2. It would reflect increasing growth in our faith and prayer life.
  3. We would be that much more in tune with the Lord and the depth of His thoughts.
  4. It would make a significant impact on our life and ministry.

As we will not be having YAG in June, let us take time to meditate on the Lord’s Word. Let us appreciate the kind of meditation that is deemed acceptable to the Lord. Let us be challenged to make acceptable meditation a real part of our lives.
