A Tribute To My Mother

Thank God for mothers

This Sunday is Mother’s Day. I would like to take this opportunity to wish all mothers: Happy Mother’s Day! I thank God for all mothers for they are all special. They have given so much of themselves in raising us. It is only right for us to pay tribute to them for who they are and all they have done for us.

Mothers are the “best”

Using the word “best” as an acronym, I would like to pay tribute to my mom and all moms for being the “best”.

1. Blessing

a. Mothers are God’s blessings to us. God has given to each one of us a mother who has loved and cared for us since our birth, as described by the Apostle Paul (1 Thess 2:7). I count myself incredibly blessed for having someone like my mom.

b. A blessing throughout my life. For 53 years, my mom has been a blessing to me. One of the greatest blessings that I was given through my mom (and dad) was to be brought to church, to Bethany, where I subsequently found faith in the Lord.

2. Expressions of God’s kind of love (1 John 3:1)

a. Unconditional. I catch a glimpse of God’s kind of love through my mom. Her expressions of love over the years have been unconditional. Whether it was preparing meals, doing the laundry or encouraging us with our studies or work, it was a love that has been unconditional and consistent.

b. Special. In my younger years, my mom would receive her bonus at the end of each year. She would use it to buy for my brothers and me a beefsteak meal each. We did not have much then. The meal was our year-end special treat, an expression of mom’s special love.

3. Supporting my choices

a. Choices that we agreed on. An important decision that I had to make was going overseas for my studies. My mom showed her support for my decision not only in agreeing to it but also in lovingly sacrificing part of her CPF when she received it to support me through my university studies. I will never forget the huge sacrifice that she made for me.

b. Those that required time. When I decided to go into the full-time ministry, my mom needed time to come to terms with my decision. My mom (and my dad) did not expect me to enter the full-time ministry as I was working in a bank. But after some time, with further interaction, she accepted my decision and fully supported my choice to serve the Lord. My mom has been a great support to me in more ways than one.

4. True to the end

No matter who we are, no matter what we have done and no matter what we have to go through, our mothers have remained true to us. They are our mothers and will always be our mothers. They will go through whatever it takes for our sake and will be there showing their love and support. I thank God for mothers, for they are indeed the “best”. I pray for God to specially bless them with grace, mercy and strength as they continue fulfilling their role as mothers.
