Singapore my country

It is a significant weekend ahead for our beloved country as we celebrate our 50th year of independence. All of Singapore is looking forward to a great time commemorating this special occasion. As we celebrate our Jubilee year, I would like to express what is in my heart concerning my country Singapore. My thoughts are real and true…conveyed with passion and heart.

A privilege to never take for granted

I count myself indeed privileged to be living in Singapore. This thought would often arise when the pastoral team would go on a mission trip to India. As we travel along the streets of Chennai, we would see many of the less fortunate sitting and sleeping by the roadside or pavement. While our heart goes out to these who are less fortunate and we seek to do what we can to reach out and to minister to them both spiritually and financially, I count it truly a privilege…a blessing to be staying here in Singapore. Returning to Singapore is always filled with much thanksgiving and joy for the privilege of calling Singapore my home…one that we should never take for granted.

A patriot at heart

About 47 years ago, I became a citizenship of Singapore by birth. Growing up in Singapore, I said my pledge in school and did my duty in the National Service. Over the years, I have developed a spirit of being a patriot. I am proud to be a Singaporean. I have a deep sense of loyalty and faithfulness to Singapore. I have served and continue to serve the country in whatever way I can. If there is ever a call to sacrifice oneself even to death, I would be willing to do so. This is how I feel about being a patriot of Singapore.

Praise for God’s undeniable hand of blessing

We have come a long way since we started out as a fishing village. Over the years, our country has become a global city. If it had not been for the vision of the late Mr Lee Kwan Yew and the dedication of his government, we would not be where we are today. God raised up Mr Lee as “unwitting servant” to Him…as His minister to rule the country concerning good and evil. (Rom 13:1-7) Mr Lee’s wise leadership made a tremendous difference to all of us today.

Things could have been very different. There are countries that are greatly divided and are at war with each other. They end up being weak on all fronts…economically, socially, politically and more. We could have become like them too. But we did not. God has blessed our country and made us strong on many fronts. While Singapore is not perfect, we can count ourselves greatly blessed. Personally, I am thankful to God and praise Him for His undeniable hand of blessing and involvement in our country and in our lives. Let us ever be thankful to God.

Praying for our country

As we look ahead to our 51st year and beyond, we should pray for our beloved country…to guide our leaders and to continue to bless our land. As a citizen and a believer, we should always seek to uphold our country in prayer (1 Tim 2:1,2) I am proud to be a Singaporean. This is my home and country. There is no other place that I would rather be. Let us seek to pray for our country and to renew our commitment and love for her.
