The example of the Lord Jesus

The Lord Jesus is the most exceptional example of doing the work of God. His example is one that is unparalleled. How He sought to purposely fulfil the work of God is so different from everyone else that even His disciples found it hard to understand Him. It is in what He did that inspires us to learn what it means to follow Him. This was something that the disciples of the Lord experienced when He reached out to a Samaritan woman. The Lord took the opportunity to reach out to a Samaritan woman at Jacob’s well as His disciples went to buy some food. When they returned with the food, they asked Him to eat. His response truly surprised them, “I have food to eat of which you do not know.” (John 4:32) What was this food that the Lord Jesus was speaking about?

The Lord’s special perspective of the work of God

“My food is to do the will of Him who sent Me, and to finish His work.” (John 4:34)

What was the Lord’s perspective concerning the work of God?

1. Spiritual food

The Lord Jesus saw the work of God as His spiritual food. Earlier, when the disciples went to buy food, the Greek word used was “trophas” which means “light food”. (John 4:8) Here, the Lord Jesus used the Greek word “brosin” which means “solid food”. Doing the work of God was like solid (spiritual) food to Him. He was nourished and strengthened by this ministry that He had with the Samaritan woman. His focus was not on physical food but spiritual food. What an excellent perspective to have concerning the work of reaching out to the lost!

2. The will of God

The Lord Jesus also saw the work of God as the will of His Father. He was conscious of doing the will of God. The author of Hebrews describes this, “Then I said, ‘Behold, I have come—in the volume of the book it is written of Me—to do Your will, O God.’” (Hebrews 10:7) All that had been written about the Lord Jesus in the Scriptures was the will of God. He came to fulfil the will of God. His reaching out to the Samaritan woman was God’s will for Him.

3. His mission

His Father had sent the Lord Jesus to fulfil His mission. The consciousness of being sent was always on His mind. This sense of mission drove the Lord Jesus to do the work of the Lord. His singlemindedness was focused on His mission that He had been sent for.

4. Completing the work

The Lord was also driven to finish the work of God. He had been entrusted with the work of God, and His food was not only to do it but to complete it. He desired to fulfil the will of God and to complete His mission. Let us truly be inspired by the perspective that the Lord Jesus had concerning the work of God.

The Lord’s concept of time in doing the work of God

Do you not say, ‘There are still four months and then comes the harvest’? Behold, I say to you, lift up your eyes and look at the fields, for they are already white for harvest!” (John 4:35) Time was truly of the essence. The Lord Jesus did not procrastinate in fulfilling the work of reaching out. The imagery that He used was to show how there was a great harvest waiting to be taken in. He had a great sense of urgency in doing the work of God. Let be challenged by the example of the Lord Jesus to be inspired to do the work of God urgently.
