Scripture Text: Genesis 24:59-67

Message: “And they blessed Rebekah” Pastor Charles Tan

INTRODUCTION

1. The Decision had been made

a) By the family of Rebekah
b) By Rebekah herself

2. The long Journey lay ahead

a) Traveling from Mesopotamia
b) Weeks of arduous traveling

THE SEND OFF

1. The Two parties

a) Rebekah and company
i) And her nurse (nanny) Genesis 24:59a
ii) And her maids Genesis 24:61a
b) Abraham’s servant and his men Genesis 24:59b

2. The Blessing pronounced

“Our sister, may you become
The mother of thousands of ten thousands;
And may your descendants possess
The gates of those who hate them.” Genesis 24:60

a) The mother of thousands of ten thousands
i) This is an application of
“Be fruitful and multiply” Genesis 9:7
ii) Not a literal idea
“Mother of thousands”
iii) But a symbolic one
Descendants are in mind
b) And may your descendants possess
the gates of those who hate them
i) Prayer for good descendants
ii) Brave and courageous
iii) Compare Psalm 127
3 Behold, children are a heritage from the LORD,
The fruit of the womb is a reward.
4 Like arrows in the hand of a warrior,
So are the children of one’s youth.
5 Happy is the man who has his quiver full of them;
They shall not be ashamed,
But shall speak with their enemies in the gate. Psalm 127:3-5
iv) Brave children who are unafraid of enemies

3. The Caravan

a) Rebekah and company
They rode on camels Genesis 24:61b
b) Abraham’s servant led the caravan Genesis 24:61c

ISAAC’S DWELLING PLACE

1. Nothing had been said about Isaac since the Mount Moriah episode

2. He had come from Beer Lahai Roi Genesis 24:62a

a) An oasis
b) He was probably checking out on his vast herds/ cattle
c) He was doing his work

3. He lived in the South country (The Negev) Genesis 24:62b

4. A glimpse of Isaac’s Personality

a) He was given to meditation Genesis 24:63a
b) He may have been anticipating
the return of Abraham’s servant
c) He saw the camels returning Genesis 24:63b

REBEKAH’S QUERIES

1. Rebekah was observant

a) She lifted her eyes
b) She saw someone walking towards them Genesis 24:64a

2. She was appropriately responsive

a) She dismounted from her camel Genesis 24:64b
i) It would not do to sit on a camel
ii) If Isaac was walking towards them
b) She asked
“Who is this man walking in the field to meet us?” Genesis 24:65a
i) She must have guessed
ii) She sought confirmation
c) The answer given
“It is my master” Genesis 24:65b

3. Rebekah veils herself Genesis 24:65c

a) As customarily required
b) As a sign of submission
c) Appropriately humble

THE REPORT OF THE SERVANT

1. Abraham’s servant reported to Isaac

a) The servant called him, “My master” Genesis 24:65
b) He recounted all that had transpired Genesis 24:66

2. All was in order

a) He had fulfilled Abraham’s task
b) He had brought Rebekah back as Isaac’s bride

THE MARRIAGE

1. Little was said about the marriage ceremony itself

2. Abraham must have been informed

3. Some significant details:

a) Sarah’s Tent
Isaac brought Rebekah to his mother’s tent Genesis 24:67a
i) She must have meant a lot to him
ii) Her death must have been hard to bear
for Isaac
b) Rebekah became his wife Genesis 24:67b
i) They were formally married
ii) They became man and wife
c) Love and Comfort
i) He loved her Genesis 24:67c
ii) Comfort found
“So Isaac was comforted after
his mother’s death” Genesis 24:67d

CONCLUSION

1. Choosing a Life Partner

a) To seek advice
b) To seek God’s blessings

2. Qualities to look for in a person

a) Faith
b) Character

3. Blessings

a) Love
b) Comfort
