Text: Hebrews 8:7-13

1. The first covenant (Hebrews 8:7a)

a) Not a reference to the Noahic Covenant
b) Nor a reference to the Abrahamic Covenant
c) It is a reference to the Sinaitic Covenant

2. If it had been faultless (Hebrews 8:7b)

a) Wherein lies the “fault”
b) The fault lay with “them” (Hebrews 8:8a)
i) The priests
ii) The people
c) A new covenant had to be found and established

3. A new covenant promised (Hebrews 8:8; Jeremiah 31:31-34)

a) The days are coming, says the LORD
b) When I will make a new covenant
i) With the house of Israel
ii) With the house of Judah

4. The old covenant

a) Not according to the covenant I made with their fathers
When I took them by the hand to lead them out of Egypt
b) Because they did not continue in My covenant
c) And I disregarded them, says the LORD (Hebrews 8:8-9)

5. Features of the new covenant

a) This is the covenant that I will make with
The house of Israel after those days (Hebrews 8:10a)
b) I will put My laws in their mind (Hebrews 8:10b)
c) And write them on their hearts (Hebrews 8:10c)
d) I will be their God (Hebrews 8:10d)
e) They shall be My people (Hebrews 8:10e)

6. Comments

a) None of them shall teach his neighbour/ brother (Hebrews 8:11a)
b) All shall know Me (Hebrews 8:11b)
c) From the least to the greatest of them (Hebrews 8:11c)

7. Further promises

a) I will be merciful to their unrighteousness (Hebrews 8:12a)
b) Their sins and lawlessness
I will remember no more (Hebrews 8:12b)

THE NEW COVENANT

1. He has made the first obsolete (Hebrews 8:13a)

2. The old covenant is obsolete and is ready to vanish away (Hebrews 8:13b)
