Text: 2 Timothy 3:15-16
8 July 2001

Dear Parents,

CONFIDENCE IN THE WORD OF GOD
The Scriptures have much to say about the family. Things can go awry in any home! Children can grow up terribly wrong!

Let’s read the Scriptures together. Let’s learn how we can apply the deep truths of Scripture in our life. Let us firstly gain great confidence in the Scriptures before we talk about how to relate the Scriptures into the work of Christian parenting.

The words of the Apostle Paul are most enlightening and encouraging,

All Scripture is given by inspiration of God,
and is profitable for doctrine, for reproof, for correction,
for instruction in righteousness.

2 Timothy 3:16

When we read the Scriptures, we must read the words contained therein with great confidence! The Word of God was given by “inspiration of God”. We need not fear to trust the teachings of God’s Word implicitly.

THE EXAMPLE OF YOUNG TIMOTHY

Timothy was the “spiritual son” of the Apostle Paul (2 Timothy 1:2). As Paul wrote an affectionate letter, which was also highly instructive, he could not help but remember Timothy’s upbringing…

…that from childhood you have known the Holy Scriptures,
which are able to make you wise for salvation
through faith which is in Jesus Christ…

2 Timothy 3:15

Timothy had a Greek father, but a Jewish mother. The reference to a childhood where he learned the Scriptures, would suggest that Timothy had been well influenced by his Jewish mother. She must have insisted that he was brought up in the knowledge of the Holy Scriptures.

CHALLENGED TO BRING UP OUR CHILDREN IN THE KNOWLEDGE OF THE SCRIPTURES

Many parents put all kinds of books into the hands of their children. Some read bedtime stories to their children. These story books could be fairy tales, Aesop fables and such like. There is nothing wrong with reading such books, but are we neglecting the Scriptures along the way?

Let us be challenged to encourage our children to read the Scriptures. Let us seek to put the Bible into their hands. We couldn’t do better than to help our children love the Scriptures from an early age.

Prayerfully,
Pastor Charlie
