The Chief Cornerstone

Text: Psalm 118; Matthew 21; Ephesians 2

THE SALVATION THAT CHRIST WOULD BRING ABOUT

1. He has become my salvation

2. He is my strength and song   (Psalm 118:14)

3. This is an answer to prayer   (Psalm 118:21)

THE NEW INSTITUTION THAT CHRIST WOULD SET UP

1. This was prophesied

2. But the language was not fully understood

a) He would be the stone that the builders had rejected   (Psalm 118:22)
b) He would become the chief cornerstone
c) This was the LORD’S doing   (Psalm 118:22)
d) This was a day of great rejoicing   (Psalm 118:22)

3. This was revealed by Jesus to His Disciples

a) He would build the church   (Matthew 16:18)
b) The gates of Hades would not prevail against it   (Matthew 16:18)

THIS WAS FINALLY UNDERSTOOD AND EXPLAINED BY THE APOSTLES

1. The Apostle Peter

a) Behold, I lay in Zion a chief cornerstone, elect, precious   (1 Peter 2:6)
b) The chief cornerstone   (1 Peter 2:7)
c) Believers are living stones   (1 Peter 2:5)
d) Being built up as a spiritual house   (1 Peter 2:5)

2. The Apostle Paul

a) Jesus is the chief cornerstone   (Ephesians 2:20)
b) Built on the Foundation of the apostles and prophets   (Ephesians 2:20)
c) Believers are being built together
For a dwelling place of God in the Spirit   (Ephesians 2:20)

APPROPRIATE RESPONSE

1. To all who believe
Jesus is precious   (1 Peter 2:7)

2. Coming to Jesus as to a living stone
Chosen and precious   (1 Peter 2:4)

3. Being built up
A spiritual house, a holy priesthood   (1 Peter 2:5)
