All Our Fathers Were Under the Cloud

Text: 1 Corinthians 10; Exodus 13:21-22

THE CONTEXT OF THE CORINTHIAN CHURCH

1. It started so well

a) Highly gifted Church
b) Their faith stood out

2. It began to falter

a) Many problems plagued the Church
b) The Apostle Paul had to address these problems
i) Directly
ii) Powerfully
iii) Authoritatively

EXAMPLES GOOD AND BAD

1. Examples that are good

a) These examples are recorded in the Scriptures
b) These examples were noted in Hebrews 11

2. Examples that are bad

a) These are also found in the Scriptures
b) Some of them are mentioned in 1 Corinthians 10

3. The purpose of highlighting these examples

To warn the Church that it can turn out badly even though it may have begun well!

THE FATHERS OF ISRAEL

1. They may be technically be regarded with respect and be called “fathers”

2. Recalling rich spiritual experiences

a) All protected by a cloud in the day   (1 Corinthians 10:1)
b) Walked through the Red Sea   (1 Corinthians 10:1)
c) Baptized into Moses   (1 Corinthians 10:2)
i) Identification with Moses
ii) Followed him

THE POINT BROUGHT ACROSS

1. These things became our examples

2. To the intent that we should not lust after evil things   (1 Corinthians 10:6)

THINGS TO REJOICE IN

1. A rich spiritual heritage

2. The Lord’s many blessings

3. The Lord’s Presence

DANGERS THAT ARE REAL

1. We can forget

2. We can backslide

3. We can be drawn to evil

4. We can end up as ancient Israel did
