INTRODUCTION

1. God the Father

a) God as Father (1 Peter 1:3, 17)
b) Foreknowledge (1 Peter 1:2)
c) Foreordination (1 Peter 1:20)

2. Jesus the Son of God

a) Blood of Jesus Christ (1 Peter 1:3, 19)
b) Resurrection of Jesus (1 Peter 1:3)
c) Revelation of Jesus Christ (1 Peter 1:7, 13)
d) A living stone (1 Peter 2:4)
e) A chief cornerstone (1 Peter 2:6, 7)

AN APPPRECIATION OF THE SPIRIT OF GOD

THE NAME-TITLES OF THE HOLY SPIRIT

1. He is called simply “The Spirit”

a) “In sanctification of the Spirit” (1 Peter 1:2)
b) You have purified your souls in obeying
The truth through the Spirit” (1 Peter 1:22)
c) Made alive by the Spirit (1 Peter 3:18)

2. He is also called “The Spirit of Christ”

“The Spirit of Christ who was in them” (1 Peter 1:11)

3. He is further called “The Holy Spirit”

“Those who have preached the gospel to you
By the Holy Spirit sent from heaven” (1 Peter 1:12)

4. He is rightly called “The Spirit of glory”

The Spirit of glory and of God rests upon you (1 Peter 4:14a)

THE SIGNIFICANCE OF THESE NAME-TITLES

1. Identification of the Person of the Holy Spirit

2. Illumination of the roles that He plays

3. Inspiration drawn from His involvement in our lives

COMMON PROBLEMS

1. Little practical impact

a) His ministry is not well-understood
b) His mighty influence does not impact as greatly as it should

2. False understanding

a) The name of the Spirit of God is used loosely/ wrongly
b) The human spirit is mistaken for the Holy Spirit
c) Much confusion results

THE MANIFOLD MINISTRY OF THE SPIRIT OF GOD

1. The work of sanctification
“Sanctification of the Spirit” (1 Peter 1:2)

a) To make us holy
b) To keep us holy
c) A continuing work
d) A vital work that He must do
e) On our own, we cannot have sanctification work done effectively

2. The work of revelation

“The Spirit of Christ who was in them” (1 Peter 1:11)

a) He has to enlighten
b) He has to help us to understand
c) We cannot find enlightenment on our own
i) Not with reference to things spiritual
ii) Not with reference to things Scriptural
d) His work in the prophets (highlighted)
e) His work in the Apostles
f) His work in our lives today

3. The work of empowering
“Those who have preached the gospel to you

a) The work of proclaiming the Gospel

A GREAT CHALLENGE

1. To Discern the Ministry of the Spirit of God in our lives

b) We need to appreciate the significance of His vital ministry

2. To Desire the Spirit of Glory to rest upon us (1 Peter 4:14)

a) Conceptually well-understood
b) Current and continuing
c) Concrete results

2. To Devote our hearts to the Lord as the Spirit of God fills us

a) The Spirit of God must continue to work in us
b) His work must be verified
i) It must be as Jesus taught (John 14-16)
ii) It is well within what is taught in the Scriptures
c) He will produce clear and definite fruit in our life
i) Character (Galatians 5:22-23)
ii) Power for life and ministry
