A GREETING OF JOY

“Rejoice, highly favoured one, the Lord is with you;
Blessed are you among women.”   Luke 1:28

2. Reasons for Joy

a) The favour of the Lord given (“grace”)
b) The Presence of the Lord
c) The blessing of the Lord

OVERWHELMED BY THIS JOYOUS GREETING

1. Mary was troubled at this greeting

2. And considered what manner of greeting this was

3. Mary did not fully comprehend this greeting of such great joy

AN IMPORTANT EXPLANATION

1. A personal word to Mary

a) Do not be afraid Luke 1:30a
b) You have found favour with God   (Luke 1:30b)

2. A profound word from the Lord

a) And behold, you will conceive in your womb   (Luke 1:31a)
b) And bring forth a Son, and shall call His name JESUS   (Luke 1:31b)
c) He will be great   (Luke 1:32a)
d) And will be called the Son of the Highest   (Luke 1:32b)
e) And the LORD God will give Him the throne of His father David   (Luke 1:32c)
f) And He will reign over the house of Jacob forever   (Luke 1:32d)
g) And of His kingdom there will be no end   (Luke 1:32e)

UNCERTAINTY EXPRESSED

How can this be, since I do not know a man?   (Luke 1:34)

1. The Holy Spirit will come upon you   (Luke 1:35a)

2. And the power of the Highest will overshadow you   (Luke 1:35b)

3. The Holy One who is to be born will be called the Son of God   (Luke 1:35c)

4. For with God nothing will be impossible   (Luke 1:37)
