SUFFERING IN LIFE

1. This is a common experience

2. All human beings will experience suffering in life

SUFFERING FOR THE LORD

1. Christ Jesus exemplified what it means to suffer

a) For the sake of fulfilling God’s plan of redemption   (Isaiah 53)
b) For the sake of sinful mankind
c) He bore our sorrows upon Himself

2. Christ Jesus also taught His Disciples to be prepared

a) To suffer for righteousness’ sake   (Matthew 5:10)
b) To suffer for His sake   (Matthew 5:11)

PAUL’S EXAMPLE OF SUFFERING FOR THE LORD

1. Rejoicing in suffering
I rejoice in my sufferings for you (Colossians 1:24)

2. The Afflictions of Christ

a) This was borne in mind
b) Paul’s sufferings reflected the sufferings of Christ   (Colossians 1:24)

3. Reasons for accepting much suffering

a) For the sake of His body, which is the church   (Colossians 1:24)
b) This was part of his ministry
according to the stewardship of God   (Colossians 1:25)

THE CHALLENGE TO SUFFER FOR OUR FAITH

1. To believe in Christ   (Philippians 1:29)

2. Also to suffer for His sake   (Philippians 1:29)

3. What it would take to be able to do this:

a) Faith
b) Strength
c) Hope
d) Love
