The Spirit of the LORD God is Upon Me

A PROPHETIC PROMISE

1. God will put the Holy Spirit on the Messiah-Servant   (Isaiah 42:1)

2. The Messiah Servant will be anointed for life and ministry   (Isaiah 42:1)

THE CONSEQUENCES OF THIS PROPHETIC PROMISE

1. It will affect the Messiah’s character

a) He will not cry out nor raise His voice   (Isaiah 42:2)
b) A bruised reed He will not break   (Isaiah 42:3)

2. It will affect the Messiah’s ministry

a) Ministry to the Gentiles   (Isaiah 42:1)
b) Ministry to the earth   (Isaiah 42:4)
c) Ministry to people in need   (Isaiah 42:7)

THE MESSIAH’S PERSONAL VIEW OF THIS PROPHETIC WORD

1. He affirms that the Holy Spirit is upon Him   (Isaiah 61:1)

2. He expresses understanding of the significance

a) Anointed for preaching   (Isaiah 61:1)
b) Sent to minister to the broken-hearted   (Isaiah 61:1)
c) Sent to proclaim liberty to the captives   (Isaiah 61:1)
d) Sent to open blind eyes   (Isaiah 61:1)
e) Sent to proclaim the Year of the Lord   (Isaiah 61:2)
f) Sent to comfort   (Isaiah 61:2)
g) Sent to bring joy   (Isaiah 61:3)
h) Sent to plant trees of righteousness   (Isaiah 61:3)

APPROPRIATE CHALLENGES

1. To understand the Person of the Holy Spirit

2. To seek the filling of the Spirit of God

3. To seek that special empowering

4. To seek application into our personal life
