A proper understanding of being alive in Christ

“What shall we say then? Shall we continue in sin that grace may abound? Certainly not! ” Romans 6:1, 2

1. Abundant grace have been given to address our sin (Romans 5:15, 17, 20)

2. The misapplying of the understanding of grace by continuing in sin

3. A strong challenge to no longer continue to be dead in sin

4. We are now dead to sin but alive to God

“How shall we who died to sin live any longer in it?” Romans 6:2

Personal identification with the Lord Jesus

1. Identification with Christ

a. Baptised into Christ

“Or do you not know that as many of us as were baptized into Christ Jesus were baptized into His death? Therefore we were buried with Him through baptism into death, that just as Christ was raised from the dead by the glory of the Father, even so we also should walk in newness of life.” Romans 6:3, 4

b. Spiritual union in Christ

“For if we have been united together in the likeness of His death, certainly we also shall be in the likeness of His resurrection,” Romans 6:5

2. Died with Christ

3. Buried with Christ

4. Raised with Christ

i. By the glory of the Father

ii. We should walk in newness of life

A paradigm shift from being dead in sin to being alive in Christ

1. Takes knowledge

a. Knowing our salvation from sin

“Knowing this, that our old man was crucified with Him, that the body of sin might be done away with, that we should no longer be slaves of sin.” Romans 6:6

b. Knowing the significance of Christ’s death and resurrection

“Knowing that Christ, having been raised from the dead, dies no more. Death no longer has dominion over Him. For the death that He died, He died to sin once for all; but the life that He lives, He lives to God.” Romans 6:9, 10

2. Takes reasoning

“For he who has died has been freed from sin.” Romans 6:7

a. “For”…Paul was using his reasoning.

b. The word “freed” in Greek is actually the word “righteous”.

3. Takes faith

“Now if we died with Christ, we believe that we shall also live with Him,” Romans 6:8

a. The use of a conditional sentence

b. We should believe…that if we are died with Christ, we would also be alive with Him

4. Takes an “alive” mindset

“Likewise you also, reckon yourselves to be dead indeed to sin, but alive to God in Christ Jesus our Lord.” Romans 6:11

a. Using our mind to consider and to reckon ourselves to be dead to sin

b. Our mindset should be one that is alive to God in Christ

Presentation of our bodies alive to God

1. The prohibition to present our bodies as dead in sin

a. Do not let sin reign in our mortal bodies by obeying it

“Therefore do not let sin reign in your mortal body, that you should obey it in its lusts.” Romans 6:12

b. Do not present your members as instrument of unrighteousness

“And do not present your members as instruments of unrighteousness to sin,” Romans 6:13

2. The challenge to present ourselves alive to God

a. To be alive rather than dead

“But present yourselves to God as being alive from the dead,” Romans 6:13

b. Present our members to be instruments of righteousness to God

“And your members as instruments of righteousness to God.” Romans 6:13
