“WHAT IS HIS NAME?”

There was a time when Moses did not know the name of the LORD. He posed this question to God at the site of the Burning Bush.

Then Moses said to God, “Indeed, when I come to the children of Israel and say to them, ‘The God of your fathers has sent me to you,’ and they say to me, ‘What is His name?’ what shall I say to them?     Exodus 3:13

GOD’S ANSWER

Graciously God answered Moses forthrightly. But God’s name was then too profound for easy comprehension.

14 And God said to Moses, “I AM WHO I AM.” And He said, “Thus you shall say to the children of Israel, ‘I AM has sent me to you.’ ”

15 Moreover God said to Moses, “Thus you shall say to the children of Israel: ‘The Lord God of your fathers, the God of Abraham, the God of Isaac, and the God of Jacob, has sent me to you. This is My name forever, and this is My memorial to all generations.’     Exodus 3:14-15

  1. “I AM WHO I AM.”

b) He is not confined by any name given

c) God is who God is!

  1. He is the God of the patriarchs

c) The God of Jacob

He is the great and living God of Moses and the children of Israel too! This “definition” of God’s name was difficult to comprehend!

PROCLAMATION OF GOD’S NAME

Some forty years later, after having served the Lord for so long. Moses was able to make this statement.

For I proclaim the name of the Lord:
Ascribe greatness to our God.
He is the Rock, His work is perfect;
For all His ways are justice,
A God of truth and without injustice;
Righteous and upright is He.     Deuteronomy 32:3-4
