JESUS OF NAZARETH
One of the names given to the Lord was “Jesus of Nazareth” (Matthew 2:23; John 1:45). An early disciple was surprised when he was told by his friend that he believed that the Messiah had come and He was from Nazareth (John 1:46).
MINISTRY IN NAZARETH
The Lord Jesus went to many towns in Galilee. Nazareth was one of the towns he visited. This was noted in Matthew 13:54-58; Mark 6:1-6). What the Lord did as He visited the synagogues.
- He read the Scriptures
- He taught from the Scriptures
REJECTION FROM HIS OWN HOMETOWN
The people in His hometown did not receive Him well. They were upset and even offended!
- They expressed astonishment Mark 6:2
a) Not in admiration
b) But in disbelief
c) The standard way by which a person becomes a well-known scholar
i) To be taught by a famous Rabbi
ii) To have spent years under a Master or Teacher
iii) The Lord Jesus did not experience this
- They doubted the source of His wisdom Mark 6:2a
a) Where did this Man get these things? Mark 6:2b
b) And what wisdom is this which is given to Him Mark 6:2c
c) That such mighty works are performed in His hands? Mark 6:2d
c) Is this not the carpenter, the son of Mary? Mark 6:3a
d) And brother of James, Joses, Judas and Simon? Mark 6:3b
e) And are not His sisters here with us? Mark 6:3c
f) So they were offended at Him Mark 6:3d
THE DEEPER PROBLEM
Both Matthew and Mark came up with the same conclusion. They pointed out the problem of unbelief. This word is the antonym of “faith!”
And He marveled because of their unbelief Mark 6:6a
And He did not do many mighty works there
Because of their unbelief. Matthew 13:58
- Unbelief is costly and deadly
- It prevents the performance of mighty deeds of the Lord Jesus Christ
- Let us be challenged to fight the problem of unbelief!
May the Lord help us to deepen our faith in the Lord Jesus Christ!
