DEEP UNBELIEF
The depth of unbelief in Moses was strong and deep. While we may understand how he felt, we cannot but note how deep his unbelief was. The following things may be noted. We must recognise them for these are problems are ours too. Three may be highlighted.
- Who am I that I should go to Pharaoh? Exodus 3:11
a) Even if Moses was a mighty prince, would he have succeeded?
b) Unbelief causes us to over-rate the importance of self
- Who am I… that I should bring the children of Israel out of Egypt? Exodus 3:11
a) What skills would be needed to lead the children of Israel out of Egypt
b) Skills are not unimportant, but they are also often over-rated
c) The necessary skills of leadership are important to possess
d) But skills in themselves must not be overrated!
- I am not eloquent Exodus 4:10
a) Eloquence was Moses’ concern
b) But would Pharaoh be won over by eloquence?
c) Speaking skills are important but even if one speaks well, it will not be able to bring about release from bondage
GOD’S PROVISION OF POWER TO OVERCOME UNBELIEF
God graciously provided all that is needed to overcome unbelief.
- He offered knowledge
a) Of Himself
b) Of His power
c) Of His plans
- He offered signs and wonders to encourage the heart
a) The burning bush
b) The turning of a rod to a serpent
c) The healing of a leprous hand
AN IMPORTANT STEP TO TAKE TO BATTLE UNBELIEF
An important step to take to overcome unbelief is to listen to the words of the Lord and then to respond with appropriate action.
Now, therefore, go,
And I will be with your mouth
And teach you what you shall say. Exodus 4:12
- Now, therefore go
a) Obedience is necessary
b) Belief is best seen in obedience
c) Unbelief cannot be defeated by mere human reasoning
- God’s personal involvement
a) This must be believed in
b) Reliance on His personal involvement is vital
Let us be challenged to act on our faith in the Lord. We must go and do the things that God wants us to do!
