A LITTLE LOWER THAN ANGELS

Text: Psalm 8

A REFLECTION OF GOD AS CREATOR

David, the brilliant Psalmist, wrote a number of Psalms that are rightly called “Messianic.” In Psalm 8, he reflected on God’s creation.

When I consider the heavens,

The work of Your fingers,

The moon and the stars,

Which You have ordained.     Psalm 8:3

His response to God’s magnificent creation was carefully stated.

O LORD, our Lord,

How excellent is Your name in all the earth,

Who have set Your glory above the heavens.   Psalm 8:1

  1. Extolling the glory of God

a) David was enthralled

b) He stood in awe of God

  1. The name of God

a) It was truly excellent

b) All creation stands in awe of the Creator

THE CREATION OF MAN

David then reflected on God’s creation of man! David’s view of man is correct! He refused to exalt man above his prescribed status!

What is man that You are mindful of him,

And the son of man that You visit him?     Psalm 8:4

  1. Man is puny in the overall perspective of God’s creation
  1. Why should God even “visit him” at all?
  1. Even the planet we call earth is miniscule in the perspective of the universe!
  1. Sadly, man has an over-rated view of himself!

GOD’S LOVE FOR MANKIND

There is no question of the fact that God loves mankind.

For You have made him a little lower than the angels,

And You have crowned him with glory and honour.     Psalm 8:5

  1. Man’s ranking with reference to the angels of God

a) He is much lower than the angels!

  1. Crowned him with glory and honour

a) Man was blessed to be made in God’s image

b) But man marred that Divine Image because of sin

  1. Christ the Son of Man

a) He became Man

b) He suffered and died to redeem mankind

c) He was crowned with glory and honour

d) Redeemed mankind is described as “brethren” to the Lord Jesus Christ!

Let us stand in awe of the glorious salvation that God has planned for mankind!
