A GLORIOUS ANTHEM

The Psalmist Asaph was greatly inspired as he dwelt on the faithfulness and mercy of the Lord.

I will sing of the mercies of the LORD forever;

With my mouth will I make known Your faithfulness

To all generations.

For I have said, “Mercy shall be built up forever;

Your faithfulness You shall establish in the very heavens.  

Psalm 89:1-2

  1. I will sing of the mercies of the LORD forever

a. The mercies of God should inspire our hearts much

b. We may sing of the mercies of the Lord forever

c. The mercies of the Lord sadly are taken too much for granted

d. It is good and right that we remember the Lord’s mercies in our life

  1. With my mouth will I make known Your faithfulness to all generations

a. God’s mercies are given abundantly because of His faithfulness

b. His mercies and His faithfulness are inseparable

c. We receive God’s mercies in our life because He is truly faithful in all His ways

d It is good and right that we should proclaim His faithfulness to all generations

  1. For I have said

a. This was the testimony of the Psalmist

b. He boldly declared his complete trust in God’s mercy and faithfulness

c. He sets for us a wonderful example of how we should share our faith in God

d. Let us emulate the example of the Psalmist in declaring our faith in the Lord

MERCY SHALL BE BUILT UP FOREVER

Mercy is not just a great theological doctrine. It may be spoken of concretely. Thus it may be described as something “built up.”

  1. God’s mercy becomes a great fortress in which we may find refuge
  1. His mercy is something we may fall back on with great assurance of heart

YOUR FAITHFULNESS YOU SHALL ESTABLISH IN THE VERY HEAVENS

God’s faithfulness is an established fact. This knowledge of God is of great significance.

  1. God’s faithfulness may be seen on earth

a. In His promises

b. In the keeping of His word

  1. His faithfulness is established in the heavens

a. God’s angels would testify of His faithfulness

b. His faithfulness is part of His Holy and Divine Being

REJOICING IN THE LORD

Let us rejoice in our faith in the Lord. We have every reason to feel wonderfully blessed as we reflect on our knowledge of God! Let us be encouraged to seek the face of our merciful and faithful God!
