UNDERSTANDING THE PHRASE “THE SON OF DAVID”

There are two ways in which we can understand the phrase “The Son of David.”

1. It is simply a genealogical reference to the men who come from the Davidic lineage. Thus Joseph could be addressed by an angel of the Lord in this way Joseph, son of David Matthew 1:20

a) This was a valid reference

b) Joseph did come from the family line of David

c) However, he would not be able to claim the throne of David at any time

2. It is a special Messianic reference to the Christ, the Messiah

a) This was how Matthew understood it as he wrote

The genealogy of Jesus Christ, the Son of David,
The son of Abraham. Matthew 1:1

b) Matthew went on to portray the Lord Jesus as the King of Israel

THE PROPHECY OF “THE SON OF DAVID”
A number of things may be noted concerning this Messianic reference.

1. The Davidic Covenant

a) This was mentioned in Jeremiah 33:21

b) A “son” was mentioned in this Davidic Covenant

2. Significance of the reference to the concept of “sonship”

a) The line of David would be preserved

b) The line of David would not be extinguished

c) From David’s line there would be born One who would be called “The Son of David”

THE FULFILMENT OF THIS PROPHECY
Matthew noted carefully how this prophecy was indeed fulfilled miraculously.

1. For many generations from the time of Abraham to the birth of Christ

a) Three sets of 14 generations each

i) Abraham to David

ii) David to the Captivity

iii) Captivity to Christ Jesus

b) This is truly a miraculous preservation of the Davidic line

i) God’s plan would be fulfilled

ii) God’s power was at work

2. Rejoicing at Christmas

a) Let us rejoice that we have the Scriptures to read

b) Let us rejoice in God’s power at work mightily
