THE SPIRIT OF WISDOM

Text: Deuteronomy 34; Joshua 1
27 July 2014

OBVIOUS QUALITIES NEEDED

What would Joshua need to succeed in his task of leading the children of Israel into the Promised Land? Two things were highlighted in the Book of Joshua.

1. Strength

“Be strong” Joshua 1:6

2. Courage

“Good courage” Joshua 1:6

However these were not the only qualities that were needed to succeed in fulfilling the work that God had given to him!

NOT SO OBVIOUS QUALITIES

There were other qualities that were needed. Let us ponder the qualities that were not as obviously declared.

1. Wisdom

“Now Joshua the son of Nun was full of the spirit of wisdom, for Moses had laid his hands on him…” Deuteronomy 34:9

a) Fullness of wisdom

b) This wisdom came as a result of the laying on of Moses’ hands

c) This wisdom came from God

d) This quality is just as important as “strength” and “courage”

2. Faith

“Do not be afraid nor be dismayed” Joshua 1:9

a) Fear must be dispelled

b) Dismay must also be rejected

c) Faith is the means by which Joshua is going to dispel these subtle but deadly enemies

d) This faith would have to be found

i) In believing in the Lord

ii) In the reading of the Lord’s word day and night

3. Obedience

“Then Joshua commanded the officers of the people…” Joshua 1:10

a) Joshua had to put into practice what God had commanded him to do

b) He began to organize the people to prepare them to enter Canaan

c) Joshua obeyed the Lord in a very active manner

OUR CHALLENGES

Let us be deeply challenged to cultivate these important qualities in our life. We will need them to help us succeed in our quest to become faithful and fruitful for the Lord!
