EVENING MESSAGE Tuesday 19 March 2019
Text: Isaiah 12, 25
Title: “We have waited for Him; we will be glad and rejoice in His salvation”
WAITING ON THE LORD
1. Much is to be discovered
2. It takes a number of things to work together to practise this correctly
THE EXAMPLE OF ISAIAH WAITIG ON THE LORD
1. Calling of Isaiah
a) Cleansing (Isaiah 6:4-6)
c) Calling (Isaiah 6:7-20)
c) Commissioning (Isaiah 6:9-10)
2. A difficult and problematic ministry outlined
a) Keep on hearing, but do not understand (Isaiah 6:9a)
b) Keep on seeing, but do not perceive (Isaiah 6:9b)
c) Israel’s spiritual state
i) Make the heart of this people dull
ii) And their ears heavy
iii) And shut their eyes
d) Lest they see with their eyes
e) And hear with their ears
f) And understand with their heart,
g) And return and be healed Isaiah 6:10
3. Isaiah’s response
LORD, how long? (Isaiah 8766:11a)
4. The LORD’s solemn reply
a) Until the cities are laid waste (Isaiah 6:11b)
b) The LORD has removed men far away (Isaiah 6:12)
c) And a tenth will be in it (Isaiah 6:13)
d) Illustration of a terebrinth tree or an oak (Isaiah 6:13)
i) The stump remains when it is cut down
ii) So the holy seed shall be its stump
WHAT IT WOULD TAKE TO SUCCESSFULLY WAIT ON THE LORD
1. Knowledge and understanding of God’s plan
a) To punish Samaria (Isaiah 9:8- 10:19)
b) To punish the other nations mentioned (Isaiah 13-24)
2. Faith to trust in God’s revealed plan
a) He would have mercy on a remnant (Isaiah 10:20-23)
b) He would cause the remnant to return (Isaiah 10:20-23)
3. Compliance with God’s word
a) A strong hand
b) A strong word of admonition not to walk in the ways of the people (Isaiah 8:11)
c) Exertion of God’s power on Isaiah’s life
4. To have courage and be unafraid of the people who would oppose him (Isaiah 8:12)
a) To be courageous is not easy
b) To be fearless is most challenging
5. To always hallow the Lord and focus on Him alone
a) The LORD of hosts, Him you shall hallow (Isaiah 8:13)
b) Let Him be Your fear (Isaiah 8:13)
c) He will be a sanctuary (Isaiah 8:14a)
d) But a stone of stumbling to others (Isaiah 8:14b)
6. Isaiah’s response
a) Bind up the testimony (Isaiah 8:16a)
b) Seal the law among my disciples (Isaiah 8:16b)
c) And I will wait on the LORD who hides His face from the house of Jacob (Isaiah 8:17)
THE SUCCESSFUL WAITING ON THE LORD
Isaiah 25
1. We have waited for Him for He will save us (Isaiah 25:9c)
2. This is the LORD;
We have waited for Him;
We will be glad and rejoice in His salvation (Isaiah 25:9)
3. The practice of waiting
a) On the basis of a deeper understanding of the LORD
b) Trusting the LORD fully
i) He has done wonderful things (Isaiah 25:1)
ii) Your counsels of old are faithfulness and truth (Isaiah 25:1)
iii) Trusting in the Lord’s provision of strength (Isaiah 25:3)
4. Waiting on the LORD has a future time element
a) He will defeat and destroy “the terrible ones” (Isaiah 25:5)
b) He will establish Zion (Isaiah 25:6-7, 10-11)
c) He will swallow up death (Isaiah 15:8)
5. Waiting on the LORD has an aspect of joy
a) This is the LORD, we have waited on Him
b) We will be glad and rejoice in His salvation (Isaiah 25:9)
6. Waiting in confident faith that His word would be fulfilled
The LORD of hosts has sworn, saying:
Surely, as I have thought, so it shall come to pass,
And as I have purposed, so it shall stand. (Isaiah 14:24)
INVITATION
1. To practise waiting on the LORD
2. To wait with faith, hope and joy trusting in the Lord and His word.
