Text: Jeremiah 29-30

Context:

1. The Captivity had become real

2. Many were deported/ exiled to Babylon Jeremiah 29:1-3

a) Elders
b) Priests
c) Prophets
d) People

MESSAGE FROM THE LORD TO THE DIASPORA

1. The LORD is the One who had sent them into captivity Jeremiah 29:4

2. Surviving in Babylon Jeremiah 29:5-7

a) Build houses and dwell in them
b) Plant gardens and eat their fruit
c) Set up families
d) That they may increase and not be diminish
e) Seek the peace of the city (Babylon)
f) Pray to the LORD for it

3. Beware false teachers Jeremiah 29:8-9

a) False prophets
b) Diviners
c) Dreams
d) They prophesy falsely

4. Exile period Jeremiah 29:10

a) 70 years
b) After which God will visit them again

5. God’s good word Jeremiah 29:11-14

a) The thoughts of God
I know the thoughts that I think towards you, says the LORD
i) Peace
ii) Not evil
iii) A future
iv) A hope
b) Responses expected
i) You will call upon Me and pray to me
ii) I will listen to you
iii) You will seek Me and find Me
iv) When you search for me with all your heart
v) I will be found by you
vi) I will bring you back from captivity
vii) I will gather you from all the nations and from all the places where I have driven you
viii) I will bring you to the place which I cause you to be carried away captive

6. God’s judgment on the false prophets Jeremiah 29:21-23

a) Ahab the son of Koliah
b) Zedekiah the son of Maaseiah
i) They prophesied a lie in the Lord’s name
ii) They will be slain by Nebuchadnezzar
c) Shemaiah the Nehelamite Jeremiah 29:24-32
i) Made priest
ii) But he taught rebellion against the LORD
ii) He and his family will be punished

A PROPHETIC PROMISE TO BE WRITTEN DOWN
Jeremiah 30

1. God’s Word to Jeremiah

a) Write in a book for yourself
b) All the words I have spoken to you

2. The Return of the Captives

a) I will bring back My People Israel and Judah Jeremiah 30:3
b) I will cause them to return to the land
That I gave to their fathers
c) They shall possess it

3. Service

a) They shall serve the LORD their God
b) And David their king whom I will raise up for them Jeremiah 30:9
c) This is a reference to the Messiah- the Lord Jesus Christ

4. Presence of the LORD

a) Do not fear, do not be dismayed
b) Behold, I will save you from afar
c) For I am with you, says the LORD, to save you Jeremiah 30:10

5. You shall be My People, and I will be your God Jeremiah 30:22

a) Bringing back the captives
I will bring back the captivity of Jacob’s tents
And have mercy on his dwelling places Jeremiah 30:18
b) Re-building the land
The city shall be built on its own mound
And the palace shall remain according to its own plan Jeremiah 30:18
c) Return of joy and thanksgiving
Then out of them shall proceed thanksgiving
And the voice of those who make merry Jeremiah 30:19
d) Growth
I will multiply them, and they shall not diminish Jeremiah 30:10
e) Glory
I will also glorify them, and they shall not be small Jeremiah 30:19
f) Children
Their children shall be as before Jeremiah 30:20
g) Congregation
And their congregation shall be established before Me Jeremiah 30:20
h) Protection
I will punish all those who oppress them Jeremiah 30:20
i) Leaders
Their nobles shall be from among them
And their governor shall come from their midst Jeremiah 30:21
j) Leaders who are near to God
Then I will cause him to draw near
And he shall approach Me Jeremiah 30:21
