I Must Do the Works of Him Who Sent Me While It Is Day

PURPOSE OF THE GOSPEL OF JOHN

“But these things are written that you may believe that Jesus is the Christ, the Son of God, and that believing you may have life in His name”   John 20:21

1. He wrote help his readers come to believe in Jesus

a. The Christ
b. The Son of God

2. The keyword that is used repeatedly: believe

a. Focus
b. Emphasis

PROBLEMS THAT HINDERED BELIEVING

1. The Gospel Writer John also traced how some found it hard to believe

2. Various problems that hindered believing were highlighted

a. Fixed mindsets (Jews)
b. Racial divide (Samaritan woman)

PRACTICAL ACTION BY THE LORD JESUS TO BATTLE UNBELIEF

“That the works of God may be revealed in Him”   John 9:3

1. He spoke the Word

2. He also performed Works

a. To demonstrate to people that He is the Christ, the Son of God
b. In the case of Jesus: signs and miracles

3. Seen in the example of how Jesus healed a blind man

a. He was blind since birth
b. But Jesus made Him see
c. It was never heard of before!

BECOMING PEOPLE WHO WILL ALSO WORK THE WORKS OF GOD

“I must work the works of Him who sent Me while it is day”   John 9:4

1. The words that Jesus spoke in John 9:4

a. Addressed to the disciples
i. As an example to them
ii. That they might follow on one day
b. The idea behind Jesus’ words: “we must do the works of Him”

2. We can also become people who will work the works of God

a. Helping people to come to believe in the Lord Jesus
b. Telling people about Jesus
c. Doing it even in small ways that count
