I Have Given You an Example

Text: John 13:1-20

DEEP KNOWLEDGE OF THE LORD JESUS

1. Knowledge of His departing from the earth   (John 13:1)

2. Knowledge that Judas would betray Him   (John 13:2)

3. Knowledge that God had given Him all things into His hands   (John 13:3)

KNOWLEDGE THAT SOME THINGS DONE MAY NOT SEEM ENOUGH

1. The years spent in the Presence of the Lord Jesus Himself

a) Taught
b) Trained
c) Trusted

2. The love outpoured   (John 13:1)

a) Different from the love of the world
b) Divine love
c) Deepest love

KNOWLEDGE THAT A PROFOUND EXAMPLE MUST BE SET

1. A deliberate example

a) He rises up from supper   (John 13:4)
b) He lays aside His garment   (John 13:4)
c) He took a towel   (John 13:4)
d) He girded Himself   (John 13:4)
e) He poured water into a basin   (John 13:5)
f) He began to wash the feet of the disciples   (John 13:5)

2. A Dirty piece of work (washing the feet of the master)

a) It was the work given to a Gentile slave
b) This was not a work given to a Jewish slave (Talmud)
c) This was a complete reversal of the social order

3. A deep silence fell on the disciples

a) None of the disciples reacted   (John 13:5)
b) Except Peter   (John 13:6)

4. A deeply profound teaching

a) Bathed (louo)
He who is bathed   (John 13:10)
b) Washed (nipto)
Needs only to wash his feet   (John 13:10)

1. Knowledge

ii) If I then, Your Teacher and Lord have washed your feet   (John 13:14)
