"A meek and humble people"

Text: Zephaniah 3:12

A GOD-BLESSED NATION

God would certainly bless those who worship Him faithfully. But was He only thinking of worship? No! God wants true worshippers to be His kind of people!

“I will leave in your midst
A meek and humble people,
And they shall trust in the name of the LORD.”
Zephaniah 3:12

1. “I will leave in your midst”

a) This text has to be read with the earlier text of Zephaniah 3:11 in mind
God will remove the proud and the haughty!
b) He will leave behind a group of worshippers who will be the opposite of the proud and haughty.
i) This group would be those who have survived the years of exile.
ii) They would be the returnees who would return with a newly found faith.
iii) These would teach others with their lives that would be marked by meekness and humility.

2. “A meek and humble people”

a) They would be in stark contrast to the “proud and haughty”.
b) These would be blessed by the Lord.
c) We are reminded of the Beatitudes of Jesus written in Matthew 5:3-10.
i) Blessed are the poor in spirit (the humble).
ii) Blessed are the meek.

3. “And they shall trust in the name of the LORD”

a) In the past, there was hardly any trust in the Lord.
i) There was trust in the might of allies (like Egypt).
ii) There was trust in idols.
iii) There was trust in the kings and princes.
iv) There was trust in the bold and mighty who were also proud and haughty.
b) In the future
i) There will be faith in the Lord God.
ii) Trust will be cultivated in God.
iii) The name of the Lord would be the focus of trust for the true worshippers.
iv) Their trust in the Lord would not be in vain!
