Day 23

"The remnant of My people shall possess them"

Text: Zephaniah 2:9

A SHARP CONTRAST

A sharp contrast may be observed about the judgment of God for Moab and Ammon and the nation of Israel. The following text requires careful study.

“‘Therefore, as I live,'”
says the LORD of hosts, the God of Israel,
‘Surely Moab shall be like Sodom,
And the people of Ammon like Gomorrah-
Overrun with weeds and saltpits,
And a perpetual desolation.
The residue of My people shall plunder them,
And the remnant of My people shall possess them.'”
Zephaniah 2:9

1. Moab was compared to Sodom.

2. Ammon was compared to Gomorrah.

3. The cities of Sodom and Gomorrah

a) They were destroyed by the Lord.
b) Their sins were heinous (Genesis 19).

4. The countries of Moab and Ammon

a) They will be overrun with weeds.
b) They would be like salt-pits.
i) They would not be able to till the ground.
ii) The people would not be able to raise up their countries again.
c) A perpetual desolation:
i) Desolation would be the fate of Moab and Ammon.
ii) The desolation would be permanent!

5. The nation of Israel

a) It also received severe rebukes from the Lord.
b) But there would be hope for the people.
c) The people would be:
i) A residue
ii) A remnant
d) But they would still be able to overpower Moab and Ammon.
e) This was due primarily to the Covenant God had given to Israel, whom God regarded as “My people”.
