"I will restore double to you"

Text: Zechariah 9:12

THE HOPE OF RESTORATION

A strong hope took root in the hearts of those who returned to the LORD in humble faith. This was the word that God gave to them.

“Return to the stronghold,
You prisoners of hope.
Even today I declare
That I will restore double to you.”
Zechariah 9:12

1. “Return to the stronghold”

a) This need not be a physical edifice.
b) The people must find in the LORD the following (as King David did):
i) A refuge
ii) A stronghold/ a fortress (Psalm 18:1-2)

2. Prisoners of hope

a) Technically they were “prisoners”.
b) Most prisoners have no hope at all of being released from their dungeons.
c) But those who had returned to God would find new faith and hope in the LORD.
d) They must hold fast to this hope, though they were yet prisoners.
e) There were some who were imprisoned but not by chains and bars.

3. “Even today I declare”

a) This was a message from the LORD.
b) This was declared to them by the prophet Zechariah.

4. “That I will restore double to you”

a) The Messiah-King would do more than restore.
b) He would bless wonderfully.
c) The people would have “a double blessing”.
