"Because of the blood of your covenant"

Text: Zechariah 9:11

THE COVENANTS OF GOD

“As for you also,
Because of the blood of your covenant,
I will set your prisoners free from the waterless pit.”
Zechariah 9:11

1. The blood of the covenant

a) This is an important phrase.
b) God gave the following Covenants:
i) To Abraham and his seed.
ii) To Israel at Mt. Sinai.
iii) To David and his seed.
iv) To the Levites.
c) The reference in this context is the Covenant God established with Israel (Exodus 20-24).
d) This covenant was established/ sealed with blood.

“This is the blood of the covenant…”
Exodus 24:8

e) God took this Covenant seriously even if Israel had failed to honour it faithfully.

2. “Because of the blood of your covenant”

a) Note the word “because”.
i) God would respond favourably to Israel for the sake of this covenant.
ii) The covenant was the causative factor for God’s actions.
b) God had always honoured the covenant given to Israel.
i) The judgment that was meted out was part of His keeping the covenant.
ii) The restoration was also in fulfilment of what God had promised.
If His people returned to Him genuinely, He would restore them.

3. “I will set your prisoners free from the waterless pit”

Many from Israel became prisoners, sent to die in “waterless pits”. But the LORD would set them free from their dungeons!
