"Show mercy and compassion"

Text: Zechariah 7:9

A WORD OF ADMONITION FROM GOD I

Were the people really interested in what God said? Or were they only looking for endorsement and commendation from the priests? The Lord gave this word of admonition to the people. The first part of the admonition would be considered here.

“Then the word of the LORD came to Zechariah, saying,
‘Thus says the LORD of hosts:
“Execute true justice,
Show mercy and compassion
Everyone to his brother.”‘”
Zechariah 7:8-9

1. Ritualistic religion

a) This focuses on the external and ritualistic aspect of religion.
b) The usual forms would include fasting, weeping, praying etc.
c) But these in themselves have no particular relevance to helping the downtrodden.

2. The true religion that God desires

a) It has to do with heeding the word of the Lord given.
b) There is recognition of God as the LORD of hosts.
i) He is to be revered.
ii) His word is to be carefully considered and obeyed.

3. Some features highlighted:

a) “Execute true justice”
i) God wants believers to be concerned and involved with justice.
ii) The needs of the poor and needy must not be ignored.
b) “Show mercy and compassion everyone to his brother”
i) Mercy and compassion are things to be cultivated and evidenced.
ii) There must be a healthy and gracious regard for the brother in need.
iii) This focus was well articulated by the Apostle James (James 1:27).
