"The Man whose name is the BRANCH"

Text: Zechariah 6:12

A WORD TO THE HIGH PRIESTHOOD

The high priest had much to attempt with reference to the task of re-building the Temple. Zechariah was sent to him with a special message from the LORD.

“Then speak to him, saying,
‘Thus says the LORD of hosts, saying:
“Behold, the Man whose name is the BRANCH!
From His place He shall branch out,
And He shall build the temple of the LORD.”‘”
Zechariah 6:12

1. “Then speak to him”

a) Joshua may be the honoured high priest.
b) Yet, he had to receive a word from Zechariah the prophet humbly.

2. “Thus says the LORD of hosts, saying”

a) This was a word from the LORD of Hosts Himself.
b) Zechariah was but His messenger.

3. “Behold, the Man whose name is the BRANCH”

a) Joshua must remember that he is but “a branch” though he was made high priest.
b) His “name” was called “branch” to help him learn apt humility.

4. BRANCH in capital letters

a) This word was spelt BRANCH for a specific reason by the NKJV translators.
b) Joshua was but a type.
c) The translators had in mind The Anti-type (The great fulfilment). He would be none other than the Messiah (Isaiah 4:2; 11:1).

5. “From His place He shall branch out, and He shall build the temple of the LORD”

a) This was a prophetic word concerning Joshua.
He would indeed branch out and build the temple, though the work seemed hard
b) The Messiah would one day branch out and build the temple of the LORD.
In that Temple, He would be the chief cornerstone!
