"Make an elaborate crown"

Text: Zechariah 6:11

THE REGALIA OF THE HIGH PRIEST

The priestly system that God gave to Israel was significant in its symbolism. A description of the regalia of the high priest may be found in the book of Exodus (Exodus 28). The high priest would be adorned majestically, “for glory and beauty” (Exodus 28:40). They are to reflect the beauty of holiness of the LORD.

THE MAKING OF A CROWN FOR JOSHUA

The gift from the returnees from Babylon was to be used to make a crown for Joshua the high priest.

“Take the silver and gold, make an elaborate crown,
and set it on the head of Joshua the son of Jehozadak,
the high priest.”
Zechariah 6:11

1. “Take the silver and gold”

a) These would be the gift that the three men from Babylon brought with them.
b) The gift was to be used for an important purpose.

2. “Make an elaborate crown”

a) The crown symbolised a number of things:
i) There would be spiritual authority given to the high priest.
ii) There would be an authentication of the role of the high priest in the new temple under construction.
iii) He would represent the priests as the head of the priestly system.
b) An elaborate crown
i) It must not be an ordinary looking crown.
ii) It must reflect “glory and beauty”.
iii) The formal garments of the high priest would not be complete without the crown.

3. “And set it on the head of Joshua the son of Jehozadak, the high priest”

a) Joshua the son of Jehozadak would be formally recognised as the high priest.
b) Zechariah was tasked to see that this was carried out fully.
