"What are these two olive trees"

Text: Zechariah 4:11

THE VISION OF THE LAMPSTAND

It would be important to recall the Vision of the Lampstand and the Olive Trees (Zechariah 4:2-3).

1. There was a lampstand of solid gold. Zechariah 4:2

2. Two olive trees were by it. Zechariah 4:3

THE LAMPSTAND

The Lampstand was a holy artifact in the Temple. Its role was to shed light in the Temple.

1. The Second Temple would be rebuilt after the pattern of the first temple.

2. The Lampstand would be put in the new Temple and it would represent the Light that God would give to the nation.

THE TWO OLIVE TREES

Zechariah now sought to understand the meaning of the two olive trees.

“Then I answered and said to him,
‘What are these two olive trees-
at the right of the lampstand and at its left?’
And I further answered and said to him,
‘What are these two olive branches that drip
into the receptacles of the two gold pipes
from which the golden oil drains?'”
Zechariah 4:11-12

1. Zechariah had two questions to raise to the teaching angel

a) What do the two olive trees represent?
i) They were on the left and right of the lampstand.
ii) This was a new feature not found in the first Temple.
b) What do the two olive branches that drip the oil into the Lampstand mean?
i) This was also a new feature.
ii) Zechariah could not fathom the meaning by himself.
iii) Thus, he asked the teaching angel for an explanation.
