Day 44

"Do you not know what these are?"

Text: Zechariah 4:5

THE PATIENCE OF THE TEACHING ANGEL

The teaching angel would of course have a vast knowledge, compared to Zechariah. Patiently he sought to help Zechariah interpret what he had seen in the vision of the golden lampstand.

“Then the angel who talked with me answered
and said to me, ‘Do you not know what these are?’
And I said, ‘No, my lord.’
So he answered and said to me:
‘This is the word of the LORD to Zerubbabel:
“Not by might nor by power but by My Spirit;”
Says the LORD of hosts.'”
Zechariah 4:5-6

1. “Then the angel who talked with me answered and said to me… and I said, ‘No, my lord.'”

a) The angel must have encouraged Zechariah to fathom the meaning by himself.
b) Zechariah had to admit that he could not fathom its meaning at all.

2. “So he answered and said to me”

a) The teaching angel accepted the answer of Zechariah.
b) He went on to teach Zechariah.

3. “This is the word of the LORD to Zerubbabel”

a) The LORD was giving a special message to the governor Zerubbabel.
b) Zechariah would be the one who would bring this word to the governor.
i) The LORD spoke to the teaching angel.
ii) The teaching angel would instruct Zechariah.
iii) Zechariah would bring this word to Zerubbabel.

4. “‘Not by might nor by power, but by My Spirit,’ says the LORD of hosts”

a) The work of rebuilding the Temple and nation would be undertaken by the LORD.
b) The power and might of human beings would not be sufficient.
c) Zerubbabel and all involved must exercise faith in the involvement of the Spirit of God.
