"A great panic from the LORD"

Text: Zechariah 14:13

A GREAT PANIC

For any army to succeed in war, great order must be maintained. If there is a severe panic, the war effort would turn out disastrously.

“It shall come to pass in that day
That a great panic from the LORD will be among them.
Everyone will seize the hand of his neighbour,
And raise his hand against his neighbour’s hand.”
Zechariah 14:13

1. “It shall come to pass in that day”

a) This was the plan of God disclosed to the prophet Zechariah.
b) Most war-plans are kept “top secret”.
c) The LORD did not fear that His plan was known.

2. “A great panic from the LORD will be among them”

a) Panic stems from fear.
b) This kind of panic was recorded in the historical books of the Bible.
i) Gideon’s victory over the Midianites (Judges 7:21-22).
ii) Jonathan’s battle against the Philistines (1 Samuel 14:15-16).
c) A similar kind of panic would be sent among the enemies of Israel.

3. Grave consequences

a) The enemies of Jerusalem:
i) They would come from different countries.
ii) They would probably have difficulties among themselves (language, culture etc).
b) Everyone would seize the hand of his neighbour. This would be done with unfriendly intentions.
c) And raise his hand against his neighbour’s hand.
i) There will be confusion.
ii) Panic would cause the troops to fight against each other.
