Day 136

"Every prophet will be ashamed of his vision"

Text: Zechariah 13:4

DECRYING THE MANTLE OF A PROPHET

The truly wise would not dare to assume to wear the mantle of a prophet.

“And it shall be in that day that every prophet
will be ashamed of his vision when he prophesies;
they will not wear a robe of coarse hair to deceive.”
Zechariah 13:4

1. Identification of a prophet

a) He will have visions given to him by God (e.g. Zechariah).
These visions are messages from the LORD.
i) They are often a reference to the future.
ii) The prophets must also be able to explain his visions accurately.
b) There was one very special prophet of God.
i) He was the prophet Elijah.
ii) His distinctive clothing was “a robe of coarse hair” (2 Kings 1:8).

2. False prophets

a) They claimed to have visions too. This was a typical claim.
b) They acted as if they were like Elijah of old. Some even dressed the part.

3. When Truth reigns

a) The false prophet would be ashamed.
b) He would have to confess that he had been preaching lies.
c) His method was to use deception.

WHY DO FALSE PROPHETS SUCCEED?

The following are typical reasons that may be forwarded. Two may be highlighted:

1. The problem of ignorance of the Word of God and its great truths.

2. The problem of not standing up to contend for the truth when false prophets arise.
