Day 120

"It was the word of the LORD"

Text: Zechariah 11:11

THE POOR OF THE FLOCK

We are reminded of the first Beatitude that the Lord Jesus taught His disciples. He said clearly, “Blessed are the poor in spirit, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven.” (Matthew 5:3). For three years, the Disciples understood what Jesus meant when He taught them about being “poor”. There was a spiritual application. But there was also a literal slant (Luke 6:20).

“So it was broken on that day.
Thus the poor of the flock, who were watching me,
knew that it was the word of the LORD.”
Zechariah 11:11

1. “So it was broken on that day”

a) The covenant was broken on that day.
b) This may not have been obvious:
i) To the religious leaders.
ii) To the multitudes.
c) But this needed to be carefully noted:
i) The breaking of a covenant was of great significance.
ii) Because of spiritual blindness and callousness of the heart, the rejection of the Good Shepherd was not fully comprehended.

2. “Thus the poor of the flock, who were watching me”

a) Only those who were carefully watching the Good Shepherd.
b) These were His disciples.
i) They were literally poor as they had left their all and followed Him for three years.
ii) They had the special blessing of being closely associated with their Master.

3. “Knew that it was the word of the LORD”

a) They had carefully listened to what was taught by their Master.
b) This was indeed the word of the LORD. It was also the will of God!
