"The LORD of hosts will visit His flock"

Text: Zechariah 10:3

THE LORD AS SHEPHERD

The LORD was described as a Shepherd in Psalm 23. David understood that he was chosen to shepherd Israel (2 Samuel 7:8). But when the shepherds appointed by God fail in their work, He will manifest Himself as the Chief Shepherd.

“My anger is kindled against the shepherds,
And I will punish the goatherds.
For the LORD of hosts will visit His flock,
The house of Judah,
And will make them as His royal horse in the battle.”
Zechariah 10:3

1. God’s anger kindled

a) Against the shepherds.
b) A similar word was used: “goatherds” (shepherding goats).
c) This is a reference to the leaders God gave to Israel (Kings, judges, priests, prophets… etc).

2. Punishment

a) God will punish those who had failed to do their work faithfully.
b) They are held accountable to the LORD.

3. “The LORD of hosts will visit His flock”

a) God will visit His flock not in His capacity as Shepherd alone.
b) He will come with all authority and power as the LORD of hosts.

4. The house of Judah

a) Judah was all that remained.
b) It was not a large house anymore.
c) All the more, shepherding should have been done faithfully.

5. How God would shepherd His flock

a) Here the imagery changed.
b) The LORD would train and equip Judah till it became a royal warhorse.
